Statement of Purpose
The statement of purpose should provide the department with information about the applicant not found in transcripts and other official documents. Applicants should provide an overview of degree and career objectives, and how participation in this graduate program will lead toward achieving them.

GRE Scores
Applicants are required to submit verbal, analytical writing and quantitative scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). In requesting that scores be sent to the UW Office of Graduate Admissions, use 4854 (University of Washington) under Score Report Recipients and 1601 for the department code.

The GRE Web site can be found at www.gre.org

Letters of Recommendation
Letters should be authored by people who can judge your capacity to undertake graduate studies. These may include present or former professors or work supervisors. Two letters are required, though more may be submitted.

Official Transcripts
Official transcripts from all collegiate institutions attended must be submitted. Transcripts must include the date and title of the degree and are not considered official unless they arrive sealed in their original envelopes.

English Language Proficiency (International Students)
Proficiency in English is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Applicants whose native language is other than English must meet this requirement. No waivers of this English proficiency requirement may be given. See Memorandum #8 and English proficiency tests comparison tables for the University's policy. Please note, if submitting English language proficiency scores, official scores from these tests should be sent from the testing agency and are valid for two years from the test date. Scores should be reported using institution code 4854. For more information, contact the UW Office of Educational Assessment or the Educational Testing Service.
